Let’s start this post by understanding what is Zen?

According to urban dictionary Zen means “A total state of focus that incorporates a total togetherness of body & mind”.

In other words, Zen is a way of life, it is a state of mind.

Zen design emphasizes on minimalist philosophy.

Also, Zen homes are meant to be relaxing and visually balanced. They should trigger a sense of calmness in one’s mind.

Home is a place where everyone is supposed to be at peace.

2. Select neutral colors

Colors play a very important role in creating calm atmosphere at home.

Be mindful of choosing them. I have written all about color psychology here.

Neutral colors are always mild and relaxing. They are not harsh on your eyes.

This makes it one of the key elements in creating a zen space.

4. Introduce natural elements

In addition to the above point, introduce other natural elements like wood, stone, water wherever possible.

Simple wooden furniture along with your neutral wall will not only look aesthetically appealing, but it also helps in enhancing the zen quotient of your home.

You can use a stone planter box, or a bench to blend it into your interiors.

Aren’t we all our happiest when we are amidst nature?

6. Bring in the cozy factor

I associate the word cozy with soft cushions, rugs or carpets, or a nice throw.

Things like this will calm our mind and makes us feel comfortable at home.

Being comfortable at home is important to creating zen factor.

7. Select right kind of light

Having right kind of light plays an important role in the overall ambiance of the house.

I would recommend selecting warm light over cool.

Again, warm light is soft on your eyes and compliments all the above mentioned factors.

If you are still at the construction stage of your house, try to introduce skylights.

Nothing beats the natural source of light.
