Let’s start this post by understanding what is Zen?
According to urban dictionary Zen means “A total state of focus that incorporates a total togetherness of body & mind”.
In other words, Zen is a way of life, it is a state of mind.
Zen design emphasizes on minimalist philosophy.
Also, Zen homes are meant to be relaxing and visually balanced. They should trigger a sense of calmness in one’s mind.
Home is a place where everyone is supposed to be at peace.
So let me telling you how to create a zen space.
Different ways to create zen space at home
1. Be a minimalist
“Clutter causes stress, and clutter is one of the main barriers of productivity” – Charisse Ward
This quote summarizes what problems clutter can cause.
In order to create a zen space, you might want to start by decluttering your home first.

After all, less is the new more.
Now is your time to embrace the life of a minimalist.
2. Select neutral colors
Colors play a very important role in creating calm atmosphere at home.
Be mindful of choosing them. I have written all about color psychology here.
Neutral colors are always mild and relaxing. They are not harsh on your eyes.
This makes it one of the key elements in creating a zen space.
3. Go green by bringing in nature
For me nothing can be more refreshing than admiring my indoor plants.
I’m sure, most of you would agree with me.
Creating your own indoor garden will always boost your mood.
These supplies will help you grow your garden.
It is also believed to improve memory and concentration.
When we are all so held up in a concrete jungle, having indoor plants is the easiest way of getting nature to our homes.
4. Introduce natural elements
In addition to the above point, introduce other natural elements like wood, stone, water wherever possible.
Simple wooden furniture along with your neutral wall will not only look aesthetically appealing, but it also helps in enhancing the zen quotient of your home.
You can use a stone planter box, or a bench to blend it into your interiors.
Aren’t we all our happiest when we are amidst nature?
This is believed to be one of the best ways to improve your mood.
Use essential oils or scented candles as much as possible.
They generate a lot of positive energy.
6. Bring in the cozy factor
I associate the word cozy with soft cushions, rugs or carpets, or a nice throw.
Things like this will calm our mind and makes us feel comfortable at home.
Being comfortable at home is important to creating zen factor.
7. Select right kind of light
Having right kind of light plays an important role in the overall ambiance of the house.
I would recommend selecting warm light over cool.
Again, warm light is soft on your eyes and compliments all the above mentioned factors.
If you are still at the construction stage of your house, try to introduce skylights.
Nothing beats the natural source of light.
When you have incorporated all these elements into your home, you will automatically have your own Zen space.
